especially given what happened to the Crowton recruits. Even mission requirements have become more strict in the past 20 years. The ratting out is a thing I have a problem with though. The person doing the ratting usually has a self righteous agenda IMO.
Some things we forget in our obsession with the HC. Times were different 35 years ago. Back then a kid could go on a mission weeks after repenting to a bishop for things that would end his mission chances now days. Smoking and drinking are still minor indiscretions and I don't think a player even today would get kicked out of school for that. At least on the first time. When I was at BYU (many years ago) President Packer gave a talk on that specific thing. He said people would freak out over a person smoking or drinking but not even give a second thought about heavy petting. He pointed out how backward this perception was.
So I think we are painting McMahon with a brush designed in 2010, not in 1979.
