They play tougher schedules and even if some of their Ws aren't impressive, if you go undefeated in a P5 conference you are pretty much assured a spot in the playoffs/NY6 bowl. Style points matter for BYU for the following reasons:
- we are not P5, outside looking in, so we have to impress and raise eyebrows. We got more miles out of that Texas beatdown than any other win so far this year.
- we have a perceived weak schedule and going undefeated might not be enough. We need to win convincingly against weaker opponents
- selecting playoff teams is somewhat judgmental, especially for non-P5 programs. They aren't going to just look at our Ws, but how we won, quality of our wins
- this is a statement season to set us up for P5 inclusion at some point in the near future
- Taysom needs to impress and win big to increase the likelihood that he will be invited to Manhattan at the end of the year
- basically need to eliminate any excuses the selection committee would have in leaving BYU out of either the playoffs or NY6 bowl
- common sense that big wins do alot more for the program than squeakers
Fans have every right to express their dissatisfaction when the team doesn't play to their full potential. But yeah, I still think we should be satisfied with the win, but not thrilled
