Is it possible that keeping it close saves their season and they get more wins?
I've thought about this, and for younger teams a closer game may keep them on track to improving throughout the season. A devastating win can send a team into a spiral. When BYU beat Pitt in '84, we pretty much sent them into a spiral. I believe our defeating of Miami also had a similar impact. I believe close games with Houston and Virginia will help those teams to see how close they were, and the players could become more focused.
