The remark was in response to a poster saying that the few brought into the gospel from seeing Ty Detmer play was offset by the 100s off put by the program.
You replied that the only people off put by BYU were people who couldn't get into church owned schools and people with hard feelings towards the church (I'm paraphrasing here).
I JOKED that those souls weren't worth saving, which really isn't an argument, straw man or not.
But the mischaracterization of the argument intended to deceive the misinformed (which is what a straw man is) is that the justification for BYU football is it is even a missionary arm of the church.
I am happy that the people approaching you because of your BYU shirt has lead to gospel discussion. I've been wearing Utah gear and had people approach me abroad asking me if I'm a Mormon which lead to gospel discussion. Would that make Utah Football a missionary arm of the church too?
Now that is a straw man.
Regardless, I'm glad we agree, a little separation of Church and Football would be healthy for everyone.
