That's not actually true,
the church does not use GAAP, they use budgets. I once did a project for a class and we did it on the church and had a meeting with the controller and the treasurer for the church. The controller said they use budgets and not your typical GAAP financial statements and the treasurer said that a very small percentage of the church's revenue comes from sources other than tithing. He even said most investments including the mall were paid for by tithing.
