Other than score, the most telling stat in any game is offensive production. Starting field position means nothing if you can't move the ball when you get it. After that its defense.
In BYUs heyday starting field position hardly mattered at all. It just meant more yards on the total. For a team like Utah who relies on their defense field position is important because you can't depend on the offense to win games.
