There are always misses that can be pointed to at every program. I actually
think the coaches do a pretty good job identifying talent, and I think recruiting is on an upward trend. However, I do agree that we don't look prepared much of the time, for whatever reason. And BYU can't afford to be a team that lacks discipline and preparation. So, I'd say that it does appear that there is a disconnect somewhere. I don't pretend to know exactly why it is, because I am not privy to how things are really run behind closed doors. I do know we see some pretty uneven discipline meted out during games for miscues. Anae will yank a player for mishandling a ball in the blink of an eye, but blatant personal fouls don't seem to result in any negative consequences. Of course, we don't see how these things are handled at practice or in meetings, but the outward appearance is that there are few consequences for mistakes.

And it's been a while since we've seen a real clean performance by a BYU squad. Bronco did have the defense playing real clean, assignment sound, mistake-free football when he was the sole defensive coordinator up through the 2012 season. That 2012 defense, for example, was awesome, and it wasn't just because we had a few dominant players. The dominant players sure help, but Bronco had that entire squad playing real clean football. Since Bronco started distancing himself from the defense, that's changed. Last year was a bit of a step back, but we were still OK on defense. This year, just awful on defense, and the sloppiness spilled over to the offense and special teams, at least to a degree. Bronco has got to get it figured out, or he won't last much longer. What I WISH Bronco would do is take back the defense. When he has the defense chewing nails and playing great, it has a great impact on the entire team. Anae would have a much easier time getting the offense to play much more perfect football if the defense was setting the tone with discipline and effort.
