I think this is the right way to look at it:
There's religious nuts on both sides. I think the main difference is the religious nuts on the UU side (you know, the /r/atheism kind of religious nut) look edgy and cool to some in their fan base, while BYU's kind of religious nut just seem lame. The Utah fans who are like this know how to sell it better (and have popular culture on their side), so that might explain why it seems worse on the UU side.
