Subsidies for state schools are not uncommon...

subsidies for academic programs and athletic programs are in place all over the country.

It is true that tithing does not directly fund athletics at BYU but it has been used during lean years as a stop gap. You also can't ignore the extreme subsidization of tuition at BYU, that benefits BYU athletics tremendously.
