He isn't the worst writer out there. He also isn't real fond of BYU. He initially promised objectivity and said something like "My professor really drilled it into us blah blah blah." That kind of makes it worse, IMO. I lose respect when publications or pundits claim to be objective while revealing their bias and passing it off as the "real" news.
You can pick out a Drew headline with some regularity--it's the one with the most pronounced, negative slant against BYU. He seems all too eager to break bad news or dive into a discussion of what's wrong with or what sucks about BYU. When times are good in Provo, however, Drew is his most measured, conservative, "objective" self.
I don't think he's evil or incompetent. But he's certainly not what I'd hope for in a BYU beat reporter and has some very grating tendencies. I'm sure he'd point out that it isn't his job to be a BYU fan. But in my mind, he rather obviously doesn't care much for the team he's covering, and his takes have more the effect of undermining vs. simply reporting on BYU sports. In a state where a huge population within the Trib's footprint are BYU grads or fans, I'd expect something better. Except it's today's Trib, so perhaps I shouldn't.
For the above other reasons, yewt Jay Drew and his employer.
