...his subject matter lines up rather consistently in the manner I've described.
Your rather pompous over-generalizations would fit nicely within his style of covering the Cougs. I'm far-removed from a blue-goggled fan who likes his news Hannity-style (though I often like O'Reilly). You seem to presuppose that's the only reason for not liking Drew.
I disagree. For example, I've critiqued and defended Monson's articles over the years and still think he's a good writer. He reacts emotionally, IMO, and can be rather juvenile, but he's put together some very good pieces writing things that large chunks of his readership--from multiple fan bases--don't want to hear but that are often true.
Jay Drew? Not necessarily a bad writer. He takes a certain slant, and collectively, it doesn't tend to be very favorable towards BYU. You can give him a pass, and say he's simply reporting "the news." I think true objectivity is very hard to maintain and that Drew's bias seeps through in his work. Sometimes that might land him closer to the truth compared to those who may actually like the BYU program. It also makes Drew rather predictable and often tedious.
If you like Drew's writing, great. But you ought to be a bit less dismissive and self-congratulatory in your critique of those that don't.
