I think a lot of folks here are missing the fact that a field is not linear.
So many seem to be under the impression that Davis had the choice of stopping before hitting the receiver, or hitting the receiver. And seem to be ignoring the possibility of Davis passing to the left or right of the receiver. As if the only option was to hit him or stop. And Davis was obviously going too fast to stop.

I agree with those who would say that there is no way Davis could stop in time. He wasn't going to stop.

I disagree with those who ignore the possibility that Davis intended to run past the receiver without touching him at all.

The hit occurred at the 15 yard line. Perhaps Davis was running past the receiver to the goal line since he hadn't seen the ball arrive yet in the off chance that the punt was over the receivers head and the receiver was hoping it would go into the endzone.

I'm simply saying this isn't an either or situation. This isn't "either Davis was going to stop, or Davis was going to hit the receiver." There is a third option. Davis was going to run past the receiver. Close by him, to be sure. But without necessarily hitting him. Of course, the shove by the USU blocker assured that this third option was not possible.
