Not where I come from...
1- Get someone else to pay for it. (If someone else where to buy your car for you, would you buy the best one). its legal, legitimate, and smart, and that is why I have a job (frankly)...
2- Engeneer types will always have difficulty beleiveing that money is not math and math is not money. Just like Oarnges.
3- The ability to spend the principle of your other assets will increase your effective External ROR by at least 4%.

I am very analytical, got my degees in economics, and mathmatically verify to eveyone of my clients that buying whole life and usings your recaptured costs and OPM (other people's money) you will simply have more in the end. I do not work with a client that I cannot make 1,000,000 from their current "plan". I put 25K a year into WL polices for myself and family. Use the divedends to offset negative cashflowing rental properties, and use my tax deductions from the depriciation "expense" to put money in the stock market where I buy index and spider funds. My measureable external ROR (meaning the money that I can actually spend) is just under 27% for every dollar I put in. The average client who does whatever they do has a negative external rate of return. Its actually quite fun. Add up all your non perishable expenses and see how much money you will have in the future...

so, Mortgage, 401(k), all your insurance, other investmetents etc (not groceries or gas type things). Estimate what you will have in the future by FV calculations. Then use your Total output and a RATE function on excel to see what your actual EROR is. If you are above 0%, you are better than most people I sit down with first.

Some reading...if this is really interesting (which it may not be)
www.leapsystems.com
Any book by Robert Kiasawki (the Rich Dad Poor Dad Series)
"You Got Screwed" at Barnes and Nobel in the investmetn sections
How you can become a millionaire (start your own city) by Chris Panos
Becoming your Own Banker by nelson Nash

It may be helpful.

Buy term and invest the difference was a concept created by Merrill Lynch, btw. Good luck.

MassMutual has seen WL sales steadily increase over the past 10 years. I am not for sure what insurance company you calculate for, but I know thier are some companies that place more than ever now.
