1. Sack = game over
2. Intentional grounding = game over
3. Gain yards in-bounds but no first down = game over unless you get a spike and get the kicking team out there (but hope someone doesn't jump offsides now that you are inside of 10 seconds or the game is over)
4. Turnover = game over
5. Gain a first down but stay in bounds = you probably have time to spike the ball (but hopefully you don't jump offsides now that you are inside of 10 seconds)
6. Gain yardage, but get out of bounds = you are better off
7. Incomplete pass = no better off, should have just kicked the field goal, but now you are probably inside of 10 seconds and run the risk of a 10 second run off
I think Kalani understood the benefits and risks and thought he had a better chance kicking a 44 yard field goal than risking another play. I'm not saying it was 100% the right decision (it didn't work), but it was a tough decision to make and wasn't crazy or even a poor choice. There are a ton of fans who get on these message boards and criticize coaches, acting like these things are so easy, when the decisions are actually pretty complex.
