There is certainly value to watching game film and sitting on the sideline. But, if there is so much value to holding a clipboard, why don't the coaches let Taysom sit a series in the second quarter, where he has been terrible, and let Tanner try a series?
The reality is that for physical skills you learn best by doing, not by watching. This year is effectively over, and the prep for next year has begun. There is no "big win" out there. You have to think strategically, and you have to let Tanner work out the kinks in the offense.
If Taysom were putting the ball on the money with touch, doing an audible out of a bad reverse that takes us out of FG range, or putting the ball where Hifo could catch it on 4th down, you give him the benefit of the doubt and let him play. But he isn't. He is still rifling balls, just like did at Virginia, and just as he has done his entire career.
Getting Tanner in now may lead to a big win over LSU or Utah - these are the types of strategic decisions that are needed. Sitting Tanner will not lead to any big wins this year (none are available), but may kneecap our chance at a big win next year.
Poor strategic thinking is what kept us from going independent in the 80s, hiring away Whit, and has left us out of the P5. We have to think strategically to survive in the current environment.
Go Cougs!!!!!
