The entire MWC profited by BYU trusting in the conference to negotiate in good faith. Then the MWC completely abandoned BYU when the fight occurred with the cable provider. Plus, the Sunday Play rule was being visited by the NCAA and several MWC schools came out against BYU (see UNLV).
Then, when BYU announced its independence, the MWC set out to destroy BYU's options in basketball and olympic sports by raiding the WAC (obviously thinking that BYU would have to abandon its plans), but BYU still found a way to make it work.
So, BYU was the biggest media draw in the MWC for years and years, but rather than deal in a mature method, the MWC attempted to strong arm BYU. How much better would the MWC be if they had agreed to keep BYU's olympic sports? Instead they (Hair Thompson) told BYU to go find another field to play on and cut off their nose to spite their face
