It's part of Mormon culture they refuse to let go though they speak against such things in General Conference.

After attending there I've felt BYU was the farm for the church to exercise the rules of Mormon culture as opposed to LDS doctrine on a population. A true Utopia. Their enforcement of such rules has many negative repercussions that they don't know how to deal with since they've painted themselves into a corner.
