conventional wisdom for early entrants to NBA draft:
1) drafted in 1st round = good choice. got guaranteed money and usually a spot on a roster
2) drafted 2nd round = up for debate if the right decision or not. could frank jackson have starred at duke next year and risen into the lottery? probably so, but he might make an impact and be on his way with the second round pick anyway.
3) undrafted = should have stayed in school

a lot has been said about mikas family and the money they have and how it makes his situation atypical. i agree. however, coming from a wealthy family in my mind would make it less likely that you leave school early to cash in on an unremarkable euro ball contract. I could see a kid from a destitute background jumping at the chance to make 85k playing ball (if he didn't think he had NBA potential), but not someone from mika's background. that's why i can't wrap my head around this decision.

being a star at byu is an experience that money can't buy. the experience of living in italy with your wife can be bought. he must hate the byu coaches or not care at all about the experience of starring at BYU.
