When I lived overseas, I technically paid zero taxes in the various countries I
lived in. My employer paid them on my behalf. So some people thought I didn't pay taxes, which I guess that technically I didn't, in my host country. But at the end of the day, via the "hypothetical tax" I paid, I ended up paying out of pocket exactly what I would have paid had I lived in the US instead of my host country.
