I hear all your points but they don't address the biggest factor
Of gauging fan interest and sustainability--money donations/revenue. You hint at declining fan interest but at the end of the day it's all about money increasing or declining that is the important gauge of fan interest.
And, I don't necessarily disagree that it feels like fans lose interest a little more quickly into the season in recent years. Just saying that the true validation to this statement hinges on the donations/revenue coming in from the various fan channels.
