Rip Van Winkle: Wake up, it is not 1984

The last time a g5 team played in a national championship game?  1984.  Several undefeated G5 teams since then, but none has even played for a national championship, let alone won.

If you think we can get back to where we were by going back in time, you are surely going to be dissapointed.  Here are some of the changes:

1 - P5/G5.  Before it was the BCS/NonBCS.  BYU's title got the big boys working together to eliminate the chance that another G5 team ever gets the chance again.  Can you honestly not see how this has changed the game?  The P5 is the real enemy of all nonP5.

2- TV money.  In 1984 it was fairly level, with bowl games and ticket revenue bringing in more money.  In the 90s, that all changed.  TV money is the big driver now, not bowl game revenue or ticket revenue. The MWC gets almost no money or distribution now, and by joining them we would be diluting a major source of revenue since it would be spread out among the other teams that will still hate us.

3-Honor Code.  It is now enforced among both players and coaches, and has become more draconian and is enforced in an extremely non-flexible manner.  Neither McMahon or Whit would be able to survive in the current honor code environment. It negatively impacts our ability to attract talent.

4- Teams moving up.  We are in a zero-sum game with the UU.  When they moved up, it was a huge, huge defeat for us.  Even more of a defeat is that BYU fans have not stepped up and insisted that the UU athletic department be self-sufficient, and pay for their share of overhead. We are now at a huge competitive disadvantage, so what worked in the past will not work now.

So, please wake up fans.  This is not 1984.  We need to fight hard, both athletically, politically, and legally, if we really want to see BYU progress. Moving back to a G5 conference to relive long-past glory days will simply not cut it.
