I would think the bigger programs in the P5 would just as soon get rid of the
many dead-wood "legacy" programs that only suckle off the teat of the bigger programs, too. It stopped being about the sport and became about the money a long time ago. so, cut out the dead wood and contract to even fewer P4 conference mates. I don't know at that point if they would even consider some of the G5 programs that have shown to be truly worthy of P5 status - I'm guessing not.
