A couple of things.
1) They don't draw enough viewers to command a P5 or near P5 media contract. Money for facilities, retaining top coaches, etc. would go a long way to realize #2.
2) They don't have any premiere programs that can challenge for a NC. The even weakest BCS conference (RIP Big East) had 2 teams that played in a BCS championship game. Recent success aside, until the AAC can place a team in the playoff any P6 is moot. While sustained success in having multiple top 25 teams is necessary it isn't sufficient for P6 inclusion. You need to break through to the playoffs. The sooner the playoffs expand the better.
