If Robinson is right, then BYU Provo sports should follow in the footsteps of BYU Idaho and BYU Hawaii. Rose and Bronco gave BYU a wonderful run for more than a decade. Neither hit all time highs for BYU, but a sustained level of success that BYU has rarely enjoyed. It's been fun. And it has made the current football season all the harder to bear. BYU doesn't need a G5 conference to succeed, but BYU would be a huge marketing get for any G5 conference. BYU went INDY because it got more $$$ than any G5 conference, more TV exposure than in any G5 conference, and more games against P5 teams.
The real value of a conference, even G5, may yet raise its ugly head. In the 1970s some teams declined to play BYU because of the ban on blacks in the priesthood. In future, the LDS position on gays may very well make it difficult for BYU to schedule games. It seems clear that the gay issue is the primary thing that kept BYU out of the B12 last year. If that dynamic advances, BYU may struggle to schedule games if it is not in a conference. At that point, BYU sports may simply cease. This is a dark take, but also a real possibility.
