An assumption you make may be part of the problem
you said they believe in the same principles we espouse. I paraphrased buy think I got it right.
Active LDS do not always espouse the same principles.
Have you ever seen an active LDS with a beard. Have you seen people kicked out of the church publicly for sinning. How many LDS folks do you know the publicly espouse they are of better character and academically superior. How many active LDS do let their son or daughter be in a room with the opposite sex late at night?
Heck, I don't even believe in the same principles as BYU and I am not a Ute fan.
What bugs some people I know is that some BYU folks think they should believe as BYU does just because they are "active LDS".
