And it is hard for people to disconnect that, IMO. I hate byu athletics. I wish byu would drop it's sports programs because that would benefit Utah. That is the only reason. If this is a zero sum game what is bad for byu is good for Utah in terms of media attention, fan support, and money in the state.
I don't hate byu as an institution of higher learning. That would be ridiculous. But, I have been treated badly by some byu fans and in some instances in ways that really upset me or have caused problems accepting how anyone could treat people like that. Those experiences make it hard to remember that these few idiots do not represent the University or an entire fan base. If you allow that blurred line to change you opinion, you lump all people together and hate everything about byu based on things that started at sporting events.
This happens often with byu fans towards the University of Utah. Many on this board got an education they could be proud of at Utah but cheer for byu. That should all be fine, but then the lines of bad treatment by idiot fans blur all of this.
This is how things get so out of control. We allow our fear, disdain, or distrust of each other based on some experiences convince our minds that this is how everyone on the other side acts and that it is condoned or even encouraged by the University. And that is hard to ever overcome
