I can’t disagree with all that you’re saying, but I do think it goes a little bit deeper than that. Whitt has always taken his jabs at BYU but I know discussing what was said and done to himself and his family after making “The Decision” is just something that he doesn’t do. It’s not my story to tell so I’ll pretty much leave it there but I do know that beyond the fan letters, there was some pretty nasty dialogue with some high level boosters and even a few people associated with BYU.
FWIW, I do know that Whitt made the efforts to keep a strong relationship with Lavell, continued to seek his council and always made sure coach knew how much he meant to him. Pretty much the same with Sitake and some others but Whitt is who he is- which is a stubborn man. As long as his private relationships with these men are good, the last thing he’s worried about is BYU fan perception.
