I knew a guy who was a scoutmaster in a non-lds troop. He lectured me on how we
did it wrong. But from what I could tell, his troop was certainly more organized, and probably more fun, than any lds troop I was in.

Not unpopular. That’s how it always should have been. Calling people into scouts that don’t want to do it

I’m sure that a total volunteer scout group is more fun. Not really a surprise.

That's because it's always in the context of church scouting. Your OP was down

I think people are more down on scouting as a mandatory church organization.

I loved scouting until I became a leader and had to go to round table

As a scoutmaster I went to one round table and vowed to never go back, and I didn't.

You didn't really have to go to round table. Even if you thought you did.

One thing that hurts is LDS troops are so small in many cases.

Also our church troops being made up of only 11-13 year olds. Made it very difficult to keep

Agree, it would have been better to combine as a stake or whatever was needed.

We briefly had a "stake troop" and "ward patrols."

The Church probably wouldn’t allow any of those activities.... so ya. People

I've heard of stakes like that. I was lucky growing up in the stake I did in TX.

The one stake I was in in the US during my youth was from TX and our trips were similar. All funded by Brisket BBQ
