I've heard of stakes like that. I was lucky growing up in the stake I did in TX.
We went to Philmont, mountain biking in Moab, scuba diving in Pensacola and beach camping/fishing in South Padre on our high adventures my 4 years. Those sold me on the value of high adventure AWAY FROM HOME not in the state park 100 miles away.
