So lower assistant pay, assistants who might not want to come to BYU, minimal
if any financial investment compared to Utah were all going to be cool for Whittingham? Remember when Chris Hill and he got in a fight over assistant pay and contracts? Wouldn’t that have happened at BYU like, year 1?
I believe you when you say he was ready to accept the job. I believe there are a million reasons why he was always going to change his mind and not accept it.
Have you seen the quote about it in “The System?” He basically says one conversation with his wife saying “but it’s BYU,” undid the whole thing and his kids would have needed psychotherapy.
I have no doubt Holmoe, Dick Harmon, and other people invested in BYU believed he was coming. He wasn’t.
