Similar thing happened to me when my fourth baby was born.

Prior to the delivery, I had checked with the OB/GYN and the hospital to make sure that they were in my network. When the baby was born she had a breathing problem and wound up in the NICU for a few days. It turns out that the NICU pediatricians were not in my network so I got a bill from them for $8,000. They wound up settling for $4,000.

I felt there was no way I could've known to check on this beforehand.
