It is called balance billing. The physician may be gouging you, or your
insurance company decided to offer the physician a horrible contract and he refused.
Make sure the bill is actually from the ER physician, sometimes your own insurance will attempt to bill you on behalf of out-of-network physicians.
If it is from the ER doc I would contact his office/billing person and explain the situation. Often times the physician will wave the balance portion.
There are so many problems with medical reiumbursement.
