How is Frank Jackson not picking BYU Bronco's fault?
I think even Bronco's biggest supporters will admit that he wasn't an aggressive recruiter but he did often travel and visit a lot of these kids in their homes. I think Bronco does not nearly enough credit for his ability to get kids to buy into his vision of BYU football all the while not compromising the importance of the honor code and academic expectations. While it can't be proven, I think there was a lot of bad mouthing of Bronco by rival school recruiters particularly within the Polynesian community in Utah. Forget that Bronco is the grandson of Wendell Mendenhall, a key figure behind the labor missionary program that built everything from CCNZ and the Polynesian Cultural Center. The local Salt Lake media (*cough Gordon Monson cough*) also kept obliging that stereotype by losing their poop whenever Bronco quoted scripture publicly or gave strange answers to their questions. This coupled with his introvert personality made him an easy target for his opponents and the local media to paint him in negative light. The "Inside BYU football" series I think was an effort to try to change that image and show a side of him that usually only the players and coaching staff sees. But Bronco likely saw the writing on the wall knowing that he is who he is and the local community will not change their opinions of him and it was time for a new challenge.

I'm encouraged by the energy Kalani has brought to BYU's recruiting efforts but even Kalani has given credit to the efforts of Bronco and his staff and that they left him with a program in good shape with good players already committed.
