That's exactly what you should do. It was a faux pas by the elders
that they might not have recognized and you are doing them a favor by texting them to let them know. On the other hand, it would be a disservice to them to not tell them.
And there is a kind way to do so which it sounds like you know exactly how to do that. It was magnanimous of you to let the guy in your home in the first place.
