Sometimes, the NCAA will even grant a waiver for a sixth season of eligibility, but usually only if both of the missed seasons fall under the medical hardship provisions: can't play in more than 1/3 of the team's games and can't play in any games past the halfway point of the season.
Hoge would qualify for a medical hardship redshirt for this season, but then his 2016 year would count against his eligibility. Either way, he'll go into the 2018 season as a Redshirt Junior with two years left to play two.
