Should we publically apologize for our own errors too? I agree we need to
apologize to our coaches and teammates BUT that's it.

I experienced this personally while playing (not at BYU). My roommate following a playoff game asked me over and over again to buy him a six-pack of beer. He wanted to play a joke by draining the context and replacing it with water. He wouldn't shut up and I was exhausted. I finally agreed on two conditions 1) he would shut-up and 2) he would puncture holes in the bottom of each can to drain them of their context WITHOUT drinking a drop, then add the water followed by sealing the holes to make it look like a full six pack. He agreed.

I purchased him the beer with my credit card as neither of us had cash on us (reason I had to purchase the beer - or so I thought) and I went back to the hotel to go to sleep. I was later awoken by a knock at my door. A police officer was standing their to arrest me for purchasing beer for a minor...my roommate was arrested for drunk driving...I was so stupid in assuming 1) my roommate was of age, 2) he would do as I asked and just didn't have the cash or a credit card - stupid.

I was asked by my coaches to apologize to my teammates, which I did. It was sobering (no pun intended) but it was an awakening for me. While I was released after paying a small fine, my roommate remained in jail for about a week - he turned of age while serving his sentence. Apologizing to the fans may have made them feel more important and knowledgeable, but what purpose would it have served myself or my teammates? I needed to regain the trust of my teammates so they would know I have their backs going forward...etc.

The Church stopped making public the transgressions of Priesthood holders decades ago for a reason - I believe for love and compassion. I for one am grateful! I recall as a Deacon, Teacher, and Priest being asked to leave the opening exercises of Priesthood so they could announce to the Elders and High Priests of Church action. At times, they would forget to turn off the speakers in the cultural hall so we would scramble to there to listen.

Go Cougars!!!!!!!!!!!!
