A friend works as part of the game day staff for the Mavericks. This includes people at the scorers table (clock, scoreboard, shot clock, official scorer, statisticians). They work on game days. It is a side job.

When the Mavericks won the title a few years back, the team offered these people the option to buy a championship ring. One person was quite offended by this and went all the way to Cuban to complain and say they should be given a ring. Cuban fired him.
