...and maybe the problem lies with Rose abdicating too much.
Schroyer brought some discipline to the team and an improved focus on defense and valuing possessions. Problem is they swung the pendulum too far the other way imo. Rose gave up too much control to Schroyer imo and Schro was pretty controlling with the offense to the detriment of several players (Haws, Seljaas, Hardnett, etc). There should've been more balance on the staff even if it meant some tension between them as they work out their approach. Lavell was very successful with that approach for a number of years.
Lavell's coaching style was to hire smart coordinators and then trust them to manage their groups. He was more of a program manager and didn't get too involved with his experts and let them fight things out sometimes while he oversaw things. There's potential for good and bad with that approach. As long as Lavell had good strong coordinators in place they attracted good upwardly mobile position coaches who brought great experiences and even better/more diverse perspective to the program before they progressed to their next stop. However when Lavell started to hang onto his coaches and they weren't moving through his program but started to sink down roots and gain tenure we lost that vibrancy and his program began to stagnate.
Kyle's approach at Utah has been a little different. He tends to be more of a control freak and gets very involved with both the offense and defense. It's been great for his defense from year to year but has hurt the offense frequently (places limitations on them, always firing coordinators, etc). Seems like he's finally found an OC he might be willing to let have a little slack and have room to operate. This year could be a break out year for them if so.
