A friend of mine, an excellent writer and one of the best students in our H.S. became a professional news and news story writer. He made a living writing independently and selling his news articles and stories to papers and magazines.
Then as he became more well known, sometimes he would be contracted to write a particular story or article.
When we saw him 10 years out of H.S. he was doing very well with his writing, it wasn't sports though. Someone asked him why he became a writer. He said — well, I decided that I'd always been a good writer and that all a person needs to write stories is a dictionary, a pen, some paper and a brain.
He said — I had all of those, and I could write wherever and whenever I wanted to so I decided to give it a go and try to make a living at it — any place I decided to go.
He was very successful with it regionally, but died about 10 years later at a relatively young age from diabetes.
Anyway, just a random story — Drew will probably catch on somewhere else because he's experienced and good at what he does.
