What I mean is he is suggesting that the MLS is seeing better attendance because of the low ticket cost. I'll give a non sports example of why this doesn't work.
I love chocolate. I will buy chocolate if I need to satisfy my sweet tooth. That does not mean I like white chocolate, or chocolate with fruit in it. You could mark these types of chocolate down to nothing prices, or even give them away for free and I will not buy/eat them. I will gladly give my money for the chocolate I like.
Likewise, if I was offered free hockey tickets I don't think I would go. I would gladly pay to see and MLS game that same night. Fans of their sports are on the same wavelength so the ticket prices are driven by demand, yes. But they are not a definitive indicator of popularity.
