With Grimes on board, I don't see BYU being bad enough on offense for Kalani to be in a position to get fired after this season. But I could easily see a scenario where the team is fairly mediocre because his 4-3 defense gets exposed consistently due to a lack of pass rush and the inability to cover man to man in the secondary. The truth is that the 4-3 relies heavily on athleticism and winning individual 1-on-1 matchups, especially at the DE & Corner spots, neither of which is a recruiting strength for BYU.
My question is whether Kalani is so tied to the 4-3 that he'd prefer to go down with the ship running "his" system than hand the reigns over to someone like Kelly Poppinga and allow him bring back the 3-4? The 3-4 not only allowed BYU to manufacture pressure and cover up athletic deficiencies in the secondary through scheme, but it emphasized the positions (OLB/ILB) where BYU could actually recruit NFL caliber athleticism consistently.
