The commissioner of the then PAC-10 came out and said directly

that they were looking for schools that were "like us." (i.e. the value system of the existing PAC schools). He made the statement in responding to a question about BYU. I appreciated his candor at the time. He never said that that alone was a deal breaker and I even got the impression at the time that the conference leadership was really listening to BYU.
