Unpopular opinion alert: I don't think schools should focus on reading books.
If we want to get serious about education and compete in the global market, we need to recognize that reading books is outdated. It's why we don't teach people how to count with an abacus or do trig with a slide rule. Time has come and gone for books.

Rather, we need to focus on utilizing things like listening to audiobooks or when the kindle reads to you, finding the right podcasts, or accessing Youtube, etc. Reading more than about 240 characters is no longer needed, except for maybe Cougarboard or reddit.

Move on.
