I think reading books is more important than ever.
I think people will lose the ability to read complex ideas that require several pages to communicate if they stop reading.
There are so many short blurbs or summaries or shorthand version written and shared that I"m afraid people's brains lose patience for reading and the ability to follow long form.
And yeah, long form is necessary.
I send and receive many emails per day. It's very common for me to get responses back to emails that address only part of the email. It's as if people stop reading partway through or they're unable to remember the entire email while responding.

Also, why do we even bother with spelling quizzes in elementary schools? What a waste when you have spellcheck.

I'm all for reading, it's critical, but how about dropping all foreign language classes and adding things like

You can feast upon the written word I. Ways that require way too much rewinding and pausing of audio.
