The reason I asked below if the arrangement was bothering your parents
Sure, there might be a reason for you and your wife to get involved - if you knew that the situation was hurting her parents in some way or if you genuinely feel for the welfare of your brother-in-law (which I'm sure you do).

What is not a noble thing to do is to get involved over some perceived personal stake in the situation (finances, fairness, etc). That's not healthy.
