My younger brother commit suicide 18 years ago while I was on my mission. Now as a father, my children ages 1-12 are constantly asking how Uncle died. We've told them it was due to a sickness, but haven't elaborated past that. I believe my 12 year old can understand and we can have that discussion as to how it affected me and my family and the depression he was facing at the time.
However, I'm worried about my 11 year old who has a low self esteem yet portrays himself confidently. Should I have been open from the beginning with them about suicide? This son has spoken already about how everyone hates him and it would be better if he wasn't in the family. Those remarks usually come after arguments with his siblings, usually when he loses a game and blows up because of it.
When is a good age to talk about suicide? Also, we are currently living in the house where my brother commit suicide. Don't want to freak them out.
