I believe the '96 or '06 or even '84 teams would struggle with these schedules

The 1985 team returned a ton of talent but split with UCLA and UW at home the next September.

The '96 and '06 and '09 teams all split with their two regular season P5 opponents.

Yes BYU would make noise if they started 4-0 next year but how many BYU teams in history would do better than even 2-2.
