There are some athletes that can juggle academics and the time a Div I athletic program requires. However with most, something has to give. Whether it’s on the field, classroom, social life, or employment something has to give. I give athletes a little more leeway as that was one more thing I had to juggle. Yes, I worked in college, so I did have a full schedule. But I don’t feel it was physically demanding as a DI athlete.
So I find it to be hypocritical when fans demand a top 25 team, but don’t give any leeway to athletes to develop such teams. I also find in interesting when they want a coach to win, but cut off his right arm when he goes out and gets one of the top graduate transfers. Other universities give a coach the tools he needs to succeed.
If you want the program to be the tail on a dog, expect the results to be the back end of a dog.
