in my car, and an old man pulled up in front of the doors so his old lady wife could load groceries in a downpour. A total stranger walking into the store saw this and walked over and shielded the old lady with his umbrella while he loaded the car with his other hand, getting drenched in the process. When he was done loading and saw that she got into the car safely, the old lady attempted to give him her bakery items she had just bought as a thank you. He politely declined three times and then entered the grocery store soaking wet.
When I returned to work I told this story to some younger colleagues of mine and their first reaction was, "That sounds creepy." It didn't surprise me.
People today call a complete stranger approaching another person in the rain and offering an umbrella and their help creepy. That's a big problem with modern society. We have closed ourselves off from others and lost our sense of community and simple human interactions. I think these younger colleagues understand kindness but I think they relate more to things like Gofundme, etc....ways they can be kind online. They are more uncomfortable with the face to face, human interaction.
Anyway what I watched was humanity at its best. Not only his helping, but her offering him her baked goods.
What I saw was not creepy. That was a man's man. That's a man I'm going to try and be more like.
