The coworkers at the end of the day think it was a nice act of kindness, but that they themselves would feel like a creeper approaching a stranger and doing it, or creeped out if a person approached them did it.

This changes things significantly, and summarizing those thoughts as "that sounds creepy" does a disservice to your colleagues, IMO.
